The Urban Joys of Paris

24 Aug 2026

Passing through Paris recently I was struck by the beauty of the streets. This trypical cafe scene by the art nouveau Metropolitain sums it up.

There are some lovely boulevards near the busy Gare du Nord making it pedestrian and cycle friendly.

In my book Better Neighbourhoods For All - Jane Jacobs Today I extol the utility and handsomeness of mansion blocks in London.  Paris has its own very attractive version. Here is a particularly fine example I happened upon walking around the 9th Arrondissement (Opera).

See the beautiful detail, and (below), with the architect's name proudly recorded in 1896.  L Maechler was a late nineteenth century Parisian architect known for designing notable residential buildings showcasing the transition from Haussmann styles to early art nouveau, according to Google/AI.
